A Very Special Gift

This Christmas our family was given a very special gift. One that my heart is overflowing with gratitude for. Before I can speak more specifically about it, I'm going to tell you a little about the last several years. Many of you have heard and read about it.  But for others this may be the first time you hear about our story.

Like many other families we have had our share of ups and downs. Five years ago our oldest left on a journey at 12 that would take him away for a few years. Years that I felt we're stolen from us and him. Days during those years where I asked "why" so often I dreamt about it.

Four years ago my beloved mother was taken home to be the Lord after a year long battle with cancer. She left a huge hole in our family but thankfully, a legacy too! She is so much of the reason we have so many wonderful memories. Some of those memories and traditions were centered around Christmas. Cookies, baking, hospitality, FAMILY, etc. These were just a few.

My father became lonely very quickly and the Lord provided him with a wonderful, Godly wife who has complimented him in so many ways. But just like all things in life, people adjust to these changes in many different ways. Some of my siblings have struggled while others were able to immediately accept this change. Emotions were very high at times and differences were hard to overlook. Time had to be allowed and patience given.

Fast forward to a little over a year ago. My oldest is home but under very difficult circumstances. Christmas was dampened by decisions made by precious ones. Many tears were shed and it was tumultuous, to say the least. But I had been learning to take each day in light of God's glorious plan for our lives. This was just part of it.

So this year, plans started to be made for Christmas. In years past, my brother, his wife and 4 children; my sister, her husband and 3 children; my youngest sister, and my parents would spend late Christmas Eve into Christmas Day together. We would all sleep around the Christmas tree, while listening to Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Andy Williams and many others. We would enjoy trying to set booby traps for my dad as he brought out our stuffed stockings. we had hoped these would wake us. One year it worked as my brother had set a string attached to a tower of plastic cups across the the path my father would take to bring our stockings. What a fun memory!

Many years have passed since we have been able to all be together again.  So as the time got closer for celebration this year we all made plans to meet at my brothers and renew our tradition. Miraculously, we all arrived and made it quite the Christmas Eve overnight. There were 23 of us in all. The children were sacked out on the floor in the living room and all the adults took the bedrooms. Unlike when we were little, our beautiful kiddos let us sleep past six a.m. We read the Christmas story and then sang two praise and worship songs.

I had a pretty neat idea for dinner time conversation. I had received 12 napkin ties from Ever Thine Home. Each napkin tie had a question or conversation starter written on it that gave you an idea to share around the theme of family and thankfulness. I envisioned laughter and heartfelt sharing, but I could never have realized what exactly the Lord was doing in each of our hearts during this hour of full bellies and tear streaked cheeks. Each napkin was placed randomly around the table. But I believe that each person sat just in the seat they needed to be in to let the healing begin. I wish with all my heart there was deep healing in my own children's hearts as well. They have such holes of pain and loss that often come when you are the adoptee. But as I think through how Christ used the Christmas dinner in the adult's lives I realize we are all in our 40's or older and finally getting "it".

Well, back to the story.

As my beloved brothers, sisters, and dad and his wife shared hurts, joys, reflections and sorrows, there was a realness to our conversation. There was vulnerability and unspoken healing. Forgiveness was given and received without the normal apologies. Many, many tears were shed amidst the realities of life lessons including parenting, marriage and yearning for other's hurting hearts.

FAMILY! That is what we received! As all of our children are growing and getting their wings, we realize that this may be the beginning of some very different traditions. New friends which may become spouses, college days, jobs in far away places: all these things play into these new memories and traditions.

But for today I am so grateful for seeming to have come full circle.

Here are a few pics for you to enjoy!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas from our home to yours. We are rejoicing in a beautiful year The Lord has given and this special day to remember and glorify our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.

Here on the Ponderosa it is especially great as all our immediate and extended family is together for the first time in many years. There is love all around.

Although my precious mom is the only one missing, I rejoice because she is bowing before the very King of Kings this day and every day.  I also rejoice because The Lord has filled my dad's lonely heart with a special lady.

May your homes be filled with love and laughter this day. May your eyes look to the Babe in a manger who became our very Redeemer who would save us from our sins!

Christmas Visit in Pictures

"Hoss" came home for a week. It was a whirlwind. Physically and emotionally. For all of us. God is working in baby steps...although I'd sure like to see leaps and bounds. But isn't this true of all of us. Thank God He is patient with us as we struggle and strive.
Here are a few pictures of our Christmas together.

This is a picture of all the cousins from my side of the family. It's been a long time since they were all together.

I'm Reminded of Grace

Max Lucado is a very well known author, but one whose books I haven't really read. As I was driving one day I heard an interview with him on Family Life Today and was intrigued to read his latest book, Grace; More Than We Deserve, Greater Than We Imagine.

Grace is one of those words that we never get to the bottom of and yet, can be thrown around in our communication and life as "cheap". As we contemplate the birth of Christ today and tomorrow, I am astounded at this grace that Christ has offered. Mr. Lucado does a great job of reminding us why we need this grace. For if we do not know the depths of our state of affairs, we will NEVER see the reason for embracing this grace. And this grace is offered in great abundance. For we need much of it. Daily.

Too often we think so highly of ourselves, more highly than we ought. Max Lucado reminds us that this free gift is part of the cure for our sin and selfishness. He is a magnificent story teller who shares his thoughts in a way that pierces your thoughts and really helps you to see the depth of his reason for writing this book. Wherever you find yourself in life, you always need grace. And this grace did not come from a cheap investment. This grace came from a sacrificial redemption plan. The plan that my Savior opened his arms to. The plan that He chose to give His life in obedience to  His Father.

I am so thankful for this grace. This grace that is anything, but cheap. This grace that opens my eyes up to how much I have been given and how much I need to extend to others.

I received a free copy of this book as part of the Booksneeze Blogging Network.

A Special Visit

It's been a tad crazy here at the Ponderosa. I pray you all had a great Thanksgiving and time of fellowship with family and friends. We certainly did.

The day after Thanksgiving we traveled a couple of hours away and went to see my grandfather, the kids' great-grandfather. He was admitted to hospice as he had internal bleeding and his body was shutting down. I don't know about you, but this grandfather was one of those who everyone loved. I am so thankful we were able to see him a few days ago and he recognized the kids and they were able to say goodbye. We received word this morning that he passed away peacefully without pain. He will be sorely missed.

(These pictures were taken in January of 2011)

On another note, our big "Hoss" is scheduled to come home for his first home visit this Christmas. He will also be turning 16 at that time. We look forward to making lots of new memories. But I would ask that you please be praying, dear friends, for a peaceful time. Please pray for my emotions. I am fighting anxiety right now, but consciously keep going back to God's Word, His promises and aiming my heart to the cross.

My thought for each day: "Lord, help me not to live in fear of the possible dangers, but in true peace and joy knowing You are in complete control."

Two Special Christmas Gifts

I have tried to make each of my children a crosstitch pillow. Here are the two I made for my girls this year for Christmas. Thanks to my Dad's wife, Lindi, for sewing the pillows. And as a special gift she made matching nightgowns for each of their American Girl dolls.

Our Heart is Filled With Thankfulness

We are home.

And full of so many emotions.

After a long 8 months of not seeing our oldest, we were able to see "Hoss".

It was a good feeling putting my arms around him. There was lots of conversation and restoration. We praise God for this.

God still must work and we are trusting Him to accomplish this. We are on our knees daily surrendering our son to Him. Salvation is of the Lord! We pray for this.

One word to sum up this visit was realness...if that is a word. "Hoss" came out and was honest and truthful about all that has happened and the games that were played in the past. Though we wanted to hear that God has saved him and changed him, we are thankful that he was honest. We would must rather have a great relationship with an unsaved son, than have a mediocre relationship with a Pharisee.

So, friends, we ask for your prayers regarding the following:

1. Salvation to "Hoss"; surrender from him.
2. When April arrives we have some decisions regarding financial and placement.
3. The many emotions for the rest of us, especially the children. They all miss him and struggle with coming back from seeing him.
4. God to continue to work in our lives to conform us to His image through this trial.

Off We Go!

We just left for a 10 road trip.

May your celebration of the Incarnation bring much joy and delightful memories.

Praise God for that little baby!

Merry Christmas!
